DPV Shore Diving in Manza, Okinawa – Explore More with Less Limits
TEAL ORANGE DIVING offers a unique DPV (Diver Propulsion Vehicle) shore diving experience in the Manza area of Okinawa.
This dive explores two popular dive sites, Cross Line and Nakayukui, accessed from a nearby beach entry. Unlike boat diving, one of the biggest advantages of shore diving is the freedom from boat schedules, allowing divers to enjoy longer dive times and a more relaxed exploration of the underwater world.
Why Use a DPV for Okinawa Shore Diving?
Many Okinawa beach dive sites have long shallow areas, making a DPV an essential tool for efficiently reaching the main dive areas while saving energy and extending exploration time.
Using a DPV, divers cruise approximately 15–20 minutes one way to reach the main dive area around 21 meters depth. The journey itself is part of the adventure, and sea turtles are almost guaranteed to be encountered along the route.
DPV certification is recommended, but it is not mandatory. Of course, having proper training and experience is always beneficial, but divers with good fundamental skills can enjoy this experience after a short orientation and practice session.

Required Equipment and Gas Configuration
Because this is an extended-range dive, a minimum of two back gas cylinders is required. Suitable configurations include:
- Backmount doubles
- Sidemount
- CCR (Closed Circuit Rebreather)
Using 32% Nitrox (EAN32) allows divers to stay within a minimum decompression profile, meaning a technical diving certification is not required for this dive.
However, if diving with air, the profile may require approximately 15 minutes of decompression, so divers without a technical diving certification will need an appropriate Nitrox certification.
A Long-Duration Exploration Dive
The average dive time is approximately 150 minutes.
A single DPV shore dive provides an experience equivalent to around four standard boat dives in terms of exploration time.
For those who usually struggle with bathroom breaks during long wetsuit dives… this is definitely a dive where planning ahead is recommended!
The terrain consists mainly of gentle sandy slopes with very gradual depth changes, making it an excellent site for divers who are new to sidemount or twinset diving.
The entry process is also very manageable. The walking distance from the beach to the entry point is short, and equipment can be carried in multiple trips before being assembled and put on in the water.
A Hidden Treasure of Marine Life
This area is known as a treasure trove for marine life. Depending on the season, divers may encounter a wide variety of macro creatures, including:
- Frogfish
- Leaf scorpionfish
- Pipefish
- Seahorses
- Ghost pipefish
Sea turtles are encountered on almost every dive, and lucky divers may also spot rare species such as:
- Stingrays
- White spotted eagle rays
